About

Beckton ward sits in the east of the London Borough of Newham and combines residential streets, parkland and former industrial sites. The Beckton branch of the DLR terminates at Beckton station and a DLR depot lies nearby, giving the ward rapid light-rail links across the Docklands network. Much of the housing was built on reclaimed land after the closure of Beckton Gas Works; a visible reminder is the Beckton Alps, a man-made mound of ash and rubble beside the old industrial zone. Beckton Park provides open space and playing fields within the ward.

Local shopping and services are concentrated around Gallions Reach Retail Park and small parades near the station. Schools, community centres and health facilities are located within walking distance for many residents. To the south-east, the long footprint of the Thames Water Beckton Sewage Treatment Works runs along the river edge and marks the boundary with the foreshore. Bus and road links connect the ward to the rest of Newham and the wider Docklands rail network.
