About

Blaenau Ffestiniog sits at the head of the Vale of Ffestiniog in Gwynedd, built around extensive slate workings. Deep quarries and high spoil heaps shape the town; names such as Llechwedd, Oakeley and Maenofferen mark former pits and adits. The town gave rise to the Ffestiniog Railway that originally carried slate to the coast, and the use of double Fairlie locomotives is linked to its narrow-gauge history. Visiting reveals former mill buildings, inclines and the carved chambers now used for tours and mining heritage.
Trawsfynydd lies a few miles southeast of Blaenau Ffestiniog beside Llyn Trawsfynydd reservoir. The reservoir supplied cooling water for the Trawsfynydd Magnox power station, which is now being decommissioned, and the site still shows the concrete structures and rail connections built to serve it. Around the village, upland moor, forestry and sheep farms extend across plateaus and enclosed valleys. Tracks and old railway formations give access to remote walks; stone farms and small hamlets reflect the area's rural settlement pattern.
