Blaenavon

Blaenavon occupies a high plateau on the northern rim of the South Wales coalfield. Its landscape is defined by the immense, preserved infrastructure of the 18th-century ironworks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dominates the town's visual character. The surrounding hills are scarred by the remnants of coal mining, with spoil heaps and old tramways now largely reclaimed by moorland vegetation.

The town itself is a linear settlement following the contours of the valley, its architecture dominated by rows of stone-built terraced housing for industrial workers. A specific feature is the preserved Blaenavon Ironworks, where original blast furnaces, balance towers, and workers' cottages offer a direct connection to its past. The landscape is one of post-industrial transition, with sheep grazing on upland commons that sit adjacent to these historic industrial monuments.
