About

Brecon is a market town in southern Powys, located at the northern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The River Usk runs through the town where it is joined by the Honddu, and the settlement grew around a medieval market square and the earthwork remains of a Norman motte. Narrow streets rise from the river toward the cathedral quarter, while the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal reaches its terminus at the Brecon Basin close to the town centre. Shops and civic buildings line Ship Street and Lion Street, reflecting the town’s role as a local service hub.

Brecon Cathedral sits on a sandstone outcrop and retains elements from its priory origins; its bells mark the town day. The canal basin and Usk towpaths provide immediate access for walkers and paddlers heading into the nearby hills, and a multi-day jazz weekend each August is part of the town’s cultural calendar. Local interpretation at the museum and information points sets out the farming, military and industrial history that shaped the valley and surrounding upland pastures.
