Brynford and Halkyn

Brynford and Halkyn ward occupies a rural, elevated area on the Flintshire uplands, characterised by its historic limestone landscape. The terrain is dominated by open farmland, scattered settlements, and the significant presence of former mining operations, which have shaped both the economy and the physical environment. The community is dispersed across several small villages, including the namesake Brynford and Halkyn, alongside Pantymwyn and Rhosesmor.

The area is defined by the extensive Halkyn Mountain, a vast common land with a distinctive, treeless plateau offering sweeping views towards the Dee Estuary. This landscape is marked by the remnants of the lead mining industry, with old engine houses and spoil heaps integrated into the scenery. The geography supports sheep farming, while the underlying network of historic mine tunnels and caverns forms a unique subterranean world.
