About

Brynmawr sits on a ridge in the northern part of Blaenau Gwent, overlooking valleys formed by former industrial activity. The town grew rapidly in the 19th century around coal and iron working, and in the 1930s it became the focus of the Brynmawr Experiment, a community-led response to mass unemployment that introduced cooperative workshops and social projects. Streets and older housing reflect that industrial period, while slopes around the town open onto moorland and pasture used for walking and local grazing.

Today Brynmawr functions as a local service centre with shops, community venues and sports clubs serving the surrounding communities. Regular bus services connect the town with other centres in Blaenau Gwent, while smaller lanes link out to rural settlements and fields. Public spaces and memorials mark the town centre, and local groups keep the history of mining and the interwar social projects present in community activity and occasional exhibitions.
