About

Clerkenwell sits in the London Borough of Islington and grew up around the medieval parish and the priory of the Knights Hospitaller. Streets such as St John Street and Clerkenwell Road link a mix of former workshops, small squares and the street market on Exmouth Market. St John's Gate, built in the early 16th century, marks the site of the priory and contains the Museum of the Order of St John. The name Clerkenwell comes from the medieval "Clerk's Well," a local spring that lent the area its identity. The subterranean River Fleet runs beneath parts of the district and shaped some of the street pattern you see today.

The area developed in the 18th and 19th centuries with clock- and watchmaking, printing and later light industry; many buildings carry traces of those trades in their façade and plan. In recent decades events such as Clerkenwell Design Week use narrow streets and former workshops for exhibitions and showrooms, while Exmouth Market keeps a regular street-trade presence. Local civic life still gathers at Clerkenwell Green and in small public squares.
