Cymer is situated in the upper Afan Valley, within the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf. The area is defined by its steep valley sides and the Afan River, with the community historically centred on coal mining. The landscape is dominated by forestry and former industrial sites, with residential terraces following the contours of the land. It lies at the confluence of the Afan and Corrwg valleys, providing access to surrounding upland areas.

The village's history is closely linked to the now-closed Cymer Colliery. Local amenities are concentrated along the main valley road.
