About

Gerlan is a residential ward situated on the northern outskirts of Bethesda, within the Ogwen Valley. The area is characterised by its steeply terraced housing, built originally for workers of the nearby Penrhyn Quarry. The streets climb the hillside, offering views across to the rugged slopes of the Carneddau mountain range.

The community is closely linked to the industrial history of slate. The local rugby club and community centre are focal points. A distinctive network of narrow lanes and footpaths, known as 'llwybrau', connects the different levels of the ward, weaving between the rows of traditional stone houses.
