About

Glaslyn ward lies within the Porthmadog community in Gwynedd, situated between the waters of the Glaslyn River estuary and Tremadog Bay. The area encompasses the town of Porthmadog itself, which developed around its historic harbour. This location places it at the coastal gateway to the Snowdonia National Park, with the peaks of the Moelwynion range visible inland.

The ward's landscape is defined by the expansive, low-lying Traeth Mawr estuary, once a tidal inlet before the construction of the Cob embankment. This nineteenth-century causeway, carrying a road and the Ffestiniog Railway, permanently altered the hydrology and created the fertile Glaslyn Marshes. The harbour area, with its distinctive slate-built warehouses, speaks directly to its past role in the regional slate trade.
