Hay-on-Wye lies in the northeastern corner of Powys, bordering England. The town is situated within the historic county of Brecknockshire, on the gently sloping western bank of the River Wye. The surrounding landscape is characterised by the rolling hills and farmland of the Welsh Marches, with the Black Mountains rising prominently to the south.
