Llanfair Caereinion & Caersws

The area around Llanfair Caereinion and Caersws is defined by its river valleys and historic transport routes. Llanfair Caereinion lies within the valley of the River Banwy, a landscape of rolling fields and wooded slopes. The town is a terminus for the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, a narrow-gauge steam line that travels through the countryside towards Welshpool. This heritage railway, originally built for agricultural purposes, provides a specific link to the area's past.

To the south, Caersws sits at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Carno. Its position made it a significant Roman fort, with earthworks still visible near the modern village. The area remains a strategic junction, where the main railway line from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury meets the Cambrian Line.
