About

Neath Abbey sits on the east bank of the River Neath, just south of Neath town centre. The site preserves the ruins of a Cistercian house founded in 1129; stone fragments from the abbey church and monastic ranges mark the original layout. Paths follow the river and cross low-lying parkland that surrounds the masonry, giving a short, direct link from the town to the riverside.

Immediately beside the medieval remains are the footprints of later industry: the Neath Abbey ironworks developed along the same riverbank in the late 18th and 19th centuries. Surviving furnace bases and engine-house foundations sit close to carved abbey stones, so stones and slag are visible within a single short walk. The juxtaposition holds traces of both monastic life and industrial production, and interpretation panels and public access points explain how the riverside was used over time. The area functions as a local green corridor, used for short walks, cycling and as a route between Neath town and the riverside.
