About

Neath town sits where the River Neath runs through a compact commercial centre. The remains of Neath Castle stand by the river alongside a short stretch of riverside parkland and the market streets that form the town centre. Neath Abbey, founded in 1129, lies close to the town and its stonework and earthworks are part of the local street pattern and industrial archaeology. The town has a long industrial history visible in former ironworks and canal structures near the centre, and Neath railway station on the South Wales Main Line gives direct rail links to nearby coastal cities.

On the southern side of the town the Gnoll Country Park contains the former Gnoll mansion, woodlands and open parkland that meet river paths used by walkers. The Neath Canal and its towpath leave the town toward the Vale of Neath; the canal and river routes are used for short walks and local cycling. Day-to-day life in the area is organised around the market, civic buildings and the compact high street, with public services and schools located within a short distance of the centre.
