Newhaven West

Newhaven West sits on the western side of Newhaven at the mouth of the River Ouse, within the Lewes district of East Sussex. The area is centred on the harbour and port facilities, with a mix of residential streets, local shops and maritime industry along the waterfront. The harbour operates ferry services across the Channel and the river mouth is shaped by concrete sea defences and lock gates that regulate tides. On the western headland a mid‑19th‑century Palmerston fort stands above the town; its gun emplacements and underground passages are visible from the sea and form part of the local landscape.

Local services include primary schools, small retail parades and boat yards clustered near the quayside, while industrial units lie close to the ferry terminal. Rail and road links connect Newhaven West to Lewes and Brighton, with the coastal A259 and the branch line serving the town. Community groups use the fort and waterfront spaces for events and maritime activities, and regular working vessels and ferries keep the harbour in active use.
