Northowram & Shelf

The Northowram & Shelf ward in Calderdale sits on higher ground to the north-east of Halifax and includes the villages of Northowram and Shelf plus surrounding farmland and moorland. The area combines residential streets, small commercial centres and traces of 19th-century industry: woollen mill buildings and former quarry sites remain, many repurposed for housing or small businesses. Shelf lies close to the boundary with Bradford district and Northowram looks down toward the Calder Valley, giving many lanes and gardens long sightlines across the river corridor. Local roads and bus routes link the ward with Halifax, Bradford and Huddersfield, while public footpaths cross the ridge at Shelf Moor and connect to bridleways used by farmers and walkers. Shops, pubs and independent trades operate from clustered streets, and converted mill buildings provide workspace and homes, keeping the pattern of settlement that grew through the 1800s visible in the present-day landscape.
