About

Pembroke Dock sits on the Milford Haven waterway at the mouth of the Cleddau estuary in Pembrokeshire. The town was created in the early 19th century as a purpose-built Royal Navy dockyard, and the grid of streets and waterfront quays still reflects that origin. Former slipways, dry docks and large dockyard buildings line parts of the seafront, while the railway station marks the seaward terminus of the Pembroke Dock branch line. The harbour frontage provides a working edge to the town rather than a purely recreational waterfront.

The seafront buildings now house the Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre and displays about the town’s shipbuilding and aviation past. Short Brothers established a flying-boat works here, with hangars and launch slipways that shaped the shoreline during the 20th century. Around the harbour, mudflats, saltmarsh and sheltered channels support waders and local fishing craft operate from small berths. Many community services, workshops and housing occupy former naval sites, so the pattern of maritime industry and everyday town life remains closely linked to the water.
