Pentre is a village situated in the Rhondda Fawr valley, positioned between Treorchy and Ton Pentre. The area developed extensively during the 19th-century coal mining boom, with its terraced housing built to accommodate the workforce. The landscape is characterised by the steep valley sides and the River Rhondda flowing through its centre.

A notable local feature is the historic Pentre Cemetery, which contains memorials to many who worked in the local pits. The village is served by Pentre railway station on the Rhondda Line, connecting it to Cardiff. Community facilities are centred along the main thoroughfare, Dunraven Street.
