About

Penydarren is located in the northern part of Merthyr Tydfil, primarily a residential area characterised by terraced housing and local community facilities. The ward is situated on the western side of the River Taff, with the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road forming a significant boundary. Its landscape includes the lower slopes of surrounding hills, providing a mix of urban and green spaces. The area has a strong historical connection to the early iron industry, which shaped its initial development.

The ward contains Penydarren Park, a large recreational ground that is home to Merthyr Tydfil Football Club. The park also houses the remains of the Penydarren Ironworks, including a lone surviving blast furnace stack. This industrial relic stands near the site of Richard Trevithick's pioneering steam locomotive demonstration in 1804. Local services are centred along Galon Uchaf Road, with several schools and community centres serving the neighbourhood.
