Its history is tied to the docks and heavy industry, with a street grid reflecting its 19th-century development. The area is directly connected to the city centre by the City Bridge and is bounded by the river and the railway lines.

The area contains a mix of residential housing, light industrial units, and retail parks. The Newport Transporter Bridge, a working Edwardian ferry, crosses the river from its base here.
