About

Pontardawe is a town in Neath Port Talbot, Wales, set on the River Tawe in the Swansea Valley. Its Welsh name translates as "bridge on the Tawe", reflecting the crossing that helped the settlement develop. The town occupies a narrow strip of valley floor with the river running close to High Street and local shops. Industry expanded here in the 19th century with iron and tinplate works; traces of that past remain in former industrial buildings, street patterns and place names. Residential areas rise from the river up the valley sides.
Pontardawe Arts Centre sits close to the river and stages theatre, music and community events, drawing local and touring productions. Green spaces and riverside paths follow the Tawe, used for walking and cycling. Local services include schools, shops and a leisure centre, and community groups maintain clubs and festivals through the year. The town serves as a local centre for surrounding villages and retains a mix of civic and commercial functions rooted in its riverside setting.
