About

Porthmadog sits on the Glaslyn estuary on the coast of Gwynedd, where a harbour and quays were built to serve the 19th-century slate trade. The town grew around maritime and railway links; a raised embankment known as the Cob holds back Traeth Mawr, creating reclaimed land and a straight causeway toward Black Rock Sands. The harbour front retains workshops, slipways and warehouses that reflect its role as an export port, with the river channel curving toward the sea and mudflats and salt marshes at low tide.

Steam trains of the narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railway begin at Porthmadog Harbour and climb into the hills toward former slate quarries, crossing timber viaducts and passing through small stations. The town functions as a local service centre for surrounding villages and as a gateway for coastal paths and estuary walks; fishing boats, yachts and working craft share space with heritage vessels. Seasonal birdlife uses the mudflats and channels, and tidal patterns shape shoreline access and local marshalling of boats.
