Roath

Roath is an inner-city district in the east of Cardiff, made up of streets of late-Victorian and Edwardian terraces, pocket parks and short walking routes. Albany Road and Wellfield Road form the main commercial spine, lined with independent shops, cafes, a grocer and a pharmacy, serving families, long-term residents and students from nearby halls. Local schools, churches and community centres provide year-round activities, and allotments and small green spaces appear between the housing streets, used for informal sports and weekend gardening.
At the heart of Roath is Roath Park, centred on a boating lake with a small white lighthouse and a Victorian glasshouse conservatory. The park includes a bowling green, rose beds and a stretch of arboretum that attracts walkers and birdwatchers; boats are hired in summer and local groups run nature and history talks. Smaller spots such as Roath Recreation Ground and community-run gardens add to the neighbourhood’s civic life, with regular volunteer-led maintenance and events.
