Ruthin is a market town in Denbighshire, north Wales, set on a bend of the River Clwyd in the Vale of Clwyd. The town grew up around a medieval street pattern and a castle that occupies an elevated site close to the centre. Narrow lanes and a traditional market square give Ruthin a compact core where many frontages date from past centuries, and the river runs close to the main streets rather than through open parkland.

Public buildings and museums record the town’s history. The Old Gaol, built in the mid-17th century, now interprets local penal and social history from its original cells and service spaces. A craft centre in converted town buildings hosts workshops and rotating exhibitions that draw local makers.
