About

Selby sits on the banks of the River Ouse in North Yorkshire, where the town centre clusters around the parish church, Selby Abbey. The abbey's stone tower rises above the riverside roofline and can be seen from the quayside and the main shopping streets. A mix of independent shops, cafes and a regular market line the town centre, and paths along the river provide space for walking and for boats to tie up at the waterfront. The layout still reflects the town’s role as a river port, with narrow lanes leading down to the water and wharfside features preserved in places.

The town grew through river trade and later through rail and mining, with traces of those industries visible in converted buildings and public spaces. Community facilities include a theatre, leisure centre and a station on the regional rail line that links Selby with the surrounding county. Annual events use the market place and riverside, and the abbey remains a focal point for concerts and civic gatherings, its tower marking Selby’s position on the Ouse.
