Shadwell Basin & Ratcliffe

Shadwell Basin sits on the north bank of the Thames in Tower Hamlets, a remnant of 19th-century dock construction that was later redeveloped as a community water space. The basin retains original dock walls and a working slipway, and it hosts a local outdoor activities centre that runs sailing, canoeing and rowing from the quayside. Boats tie up alongside converted warehouses and there are viewpoints along the basin edge where moored barges and small working craft are visible close to the water.

Ratcliffe occupies the riverside strip beside Shadwell Basin and carries a maritime and industrial imprint: tight streets that once served shipyards and wharves, riverside repair yards and former warehouses now in mixed use. The Thames Path traces the riverfront through the neighbourhood and the cluster of small-scale boatyards and timber yards still signals active river trade. Local housing, community facilities and pocket greens sit alongside surviving dock structures, creating an area where working river uses and residential life are layered on the same old quays.
