About

Skipton North sits at the northern edge of the market town of Skipton, where the Leeds and Liverpool Canal reaches the stone-built basin below Skipton Castle, a stronghold dating from the 11th century. Streets around the market place and the canal basin hold independent shops, weekly stalls and the railway station that links the town to the wider region. The built landscape is punctuated by canal locks, former mills and rows of nineteenth-century terraced houses that reflect the town’s role in transport and trade.

Upper Wharfedale runs north from Skipton into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, following the headwaters of the River Wharfe through a folded limestone valley. Drystone walls, hay meadows and scattered stone barns mark the agricultural pattern; narrow lanes lead to villages such as Grassington and Kettlewell. Kilnsey Crag rises above the dale as a single band of exposed limestone, used by climbers and visible from the road. Public rights of way and short river crossings provide direct access to upland pastures and riverside walks.
