Tadcaster

Tadcaster sits on the north bank of the River Wharfe in North Yorkshire, where a crossing has linked local lanes and later the A64. The town's Roman name, Calcaria, reflects the Magnesian limestone used in nearby kilns and buildings. Market charters and coaching routes shaped the centre; a stone bridge across the Wharfe has stood for centuries. That bridge partially collapsed in December 2015 after heavy flooding and was repaired and reopened to traffic once structural work and river-banks were restored.

Brewing and malting have defined the local economy for generations; the town contains two long-established breweries that draw on the local water and barley supply. Streets of stone hold pubs, maltings and family businesses, and paths along the river give access to floodplain meadows and fishing spots. Civic buildings, a market square and a scattering of industrial yards record the shift from agriculture to light industry while retaining plots used for hop and cereal storage.
