Tawe Uchaf is a large, sparsely populated ward in the upper Swansea Valley. Its landscape is defined by the River Tawe, moorland, and forestry plantations. The area includes the villages of Ystradgynlais and Cwmtwrch, which historically developed around coal mining and metal industries. These communities are situated on the valley floor, with the surrounding uplands used for sheep farming and water catchment.

The terrain rises steeply to the north into the limestone massif of Mynydd Du, part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. A notable feature is the Craig-y-Nos Country Park, which contains the grounds and opera house of the former estate of 19th-century opera singer Adelina Patti. The ward's economy has shifted from heavy industry towards tourism, outdoor recreation, and smaller-scale employment.
