About

Tredegar occupies a long, narrow valley within the western reaches of the South Wales Valleys. The settlement is historically defined by the iron and coal industries, with its terraced housing climbing the steep valley sides. The town centre lies along a main thoroughfare following the river, with commercial and civic buildings concentrated here. Its landscape is characterised by the close proximity of residential areas to former industrial sites and expansive upland common.

A central feature is the large, circular Bedwellty Park, which contains formal gardens, a war memorial, and Tredegar House. The town's layout and infrastructure were significantly influenced by the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company in the 19th century. This industrial past is visibly embedded in the urban fabric, from the architecture to the surrounding hills marked by old tips and quarries. The Sirhowy Valley Walk follows the course of the river through the area.
