About

Treorchy sits in the Rhondda Fawr valley in Rhondda Cynon Taf. The River Rhondda runs through the settlement, with terraced housing climbing the valley sides. The A4058 and the Rhondda Line both connect Treorchy to neighbouring communities and to Cardiff; trains call at Treorchy railway station. The town developed around deep coal mining in the 19th and 20th centuries; remnants of pits and spoil tips remain part of the landscape and inform local street patterns and green spaces.

The town retains cultural institutions tied to its mining past. The Parc and Dare Theatre, built as a miners' institute, fronts the main street and houses an ornate auditorium used for concerts, amateur drama and community events. Treorchy Male Choir regularly rehearses and performs in the town. Local sport centres on Treorchy RFC and leisure provision along the main street, where independent shops, cafes and public houses serve residents. Paths climb directly from the valley floor into surrounding woods and ridges, offering direct access to valley-top views and routes used by walkers.
