Waunfawr is a ward in the Arfon area of Gwynedd, situated north of the city of Caernarfon. The community encompasses the village of Waunfawr itself and surrounding rural land, lying near the foothills of the Eryri (Snowdonia) mountains. The area's landscape is characterised by agricultural fields, woodland, and views towards the peaks of Mynydd Mawr and the Nantlle Ridge. The Afon Gwyrfai river flows through the ward.

The village is a residential settlement with local services, positioned along the former route of the Caernarfon to Llanberis railway. This line is now part of the Rheilffordd Eryri (Welsh Highland Railway), a narrow-gauge heritage railway that stops at Waunfawr station. The ward includes the hamlet of Caeathro and is bordered by the A487 trunk road, providing a connection to the wider region while maintaining a distinct, quieter character.
