About

Welshpool sits in the broad valley of the River Severn in eastern Powys. The town is a historic market centre, with its economy traditionally linked to agriculture and its position near the English border. The Montgomery Canal runs through the area, its restored sections now used for leisure. The landscape transitions from the valley floor to the rising slopes of the Long Mountain to the east.

A dominant feature is Powis Castle, its medieval structure and extensive terraced gardens overlooking the town from a prominent sandstone ridge. The castle grounds house the National Trust's collection of rare plants. The weekly livestock market remains a focal point, and the town's streets are lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings that reflect its past prosperity from the wool and flannel trades.
