Whitchurch

Whitchurch sits about three miles north of Cardiff city centre and functions as a largely residential suburb. The village high street along Whitchurch Road contains shops, pubs, a post office and a public library, and the area takes its name from an old white church that stood on the parish site. Stretches of Victorian and interwar housing line the streets around the centre, and the former Victorian hospital on Whitchurch Road has been redeveloped for housing in recent years, leaving a mix of older terraces and newer estates.

Local services include primary schools and Whitchurch High School, community halls and sports pitches used by clubs and local groups. Whitchurch railway station provides regular commuter trains into central Cardiff, and a network of bus routes links the suburb to other parts of the city. On the northern edge the built-up area gives way to fields and footpaths, used for walking and local leisure, which mark the transition from suburb to countryside.
