The community takes its name from the village of Bontnewydd, which translates to 'New Bridge'. The area is traversed by the A487 trunk road, a major transport route through this part of north-west Wales. A notable local feature is the presence of the Cae Gwyn cave, a significant archaeological site where evidence of early human activity has been discovered.
