The area is primarily residential, with housing developments spread across a landscape of fields and low hills. It functions largely as a commuter settlement for the larger urban centre nearby. The ward is bordered by the Afon Gwyrfai river to the north.

The community takes its name from the village of Bontnewydd, which translates to 'New Bridge'. The area is traversed by the A487 trunk road, a major transport route through this part of north-west Wales.
