About

Yarm is a small market town in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees, set on the south bank of a pronounced meander of the River Tees. The High Street runs along a ridge above the river and narrows toward a cobbled section near the old bridge, which links the town to the riverside. Buildings along the street date from Georgian and Victorian periods and contain shops, cafés and independent traders clustered around the market area. A riverside walk follows the Tees below the town, passing boats and open floodplain.

The town centre hosts regular market days on the High Street and occasional fairs in the market place. Local facilities include pubs, a theatre space and small galleries, plus schools and community venues that support events throughout the year. Railway and bus services connect Yarm with the rest of Stockton-on-Tees, while footpaths and cycle routes run along the river. The town’s steep approach to the bridge and the narrow curving high street give a clear sense of how the settlement grew around the river crossing.
