About

The City of London, known as the Square Mile, is the historic and financial centre of Greater London. Covering roughly one square mile, it contains the Bank of England on Threadneedle Street, the London Stock Exchange at Paternoster Square and St Paul’s Cathedral on Ludgate Hill. Fragments of the Roman wall survive in places along the road called London Wall, and streets such as Cheapside and Cornhill follow medieval routes. Small shops, livery company halls and trading floors sit side by side, and the Guildhall complex houses civic offices and the City archives.

The City’s governance is distinct: the City of London Corporation, its own police force and an annually elected Lord Mayor maintain civic and ceremonial life, marked each November by the Lord Mayor’s Show. More than a hundred livery companies continue to meet in historic halls. Modern towers such as 30 St Mary Axe and 20 Fenchurch Street rise above narrow alleys and covered courtyards. Bank junction, where Threadneedle Street, Cornhill and Lombard Street converge, functions as a centre for finance and transport, and the London Stone remains embedded on Cannon Street as a local reference point.
