Llantwit Major

Llantwit Major sits on the south coast of the Vale of Glamorgan, where a small sandy and pebbled shore meets cliffs and grazing land. The Wales Coast Path runs through the town, linking the headland and beach to nearby stretches of coast. Behind the seafront the landscape opens into fields and lanes that lead to hamlets and the patchwork of farms that define the local area. The town centre retains a compact street pattern with stone buildings and narrow passages that reflect its long settlement history.

The place is best known for its early Christian site around St Illtud’s Church, where an insular monastic school was established in the 5th–6th centuries and where a collection of early medieval inscribed stones can be seen in situ. Ruins and reused stonework from the medieval college remain close to the churchyard, and small museums and information panels outline the town’s archaeology and medieval connections. Local amenities, a primary school and community spaces sit within easy walking distance of the shoreline, making the settlement both a working community and a point of access to the coast.
