About

Silvertown and Royal Wharf sit on the north bank of the Thames in Newham, rooted in dockland industry. Silvertown still bears industrial marks: the Tate & Lyle sugar works with its silos and conveyor plant on the waterfront and the empty shells of Millennium Mills at the edge of Royal Victoria Dock. Royal Wharf occupies former dock-side wharves and piers, replacing warehouses with riverside housing, streets, shops and a linear park along the Thames foreshore. The area is threaded by Silvertown Way and linked to the rest of the borough by West Silvertown and Pontoon Dock DLR stations.

River transport serves the riverside developments via Royal Wharf Pier, and the foreshore walk follows the dock walls and retaining structures used for shipping. Redevelopment plans for Silvertown Quays and the proposed Silvertown Tunnel are part of ongoing change, but much of the local pattern remains defined by dock basins, mooring points and warehouses repurposed for housing and light industry. London City Airport lies a short distance east, visible from parts of the riverside.
