Goring-by-Sea sits on the coast at the western edge of Worthing, with a long shingle beach and a concrete promenade backed by a low sea wall. Wooden groynes run out into the Channel at regular intervals and the railway line runs close to the shore; Goring-by-Sea station on the West Coastway Line provides regular connections along the coast. A compact shopping parade and a mix of local services — shops, takeaways, a library and community halls — form the village centre around Goring Road, giving the area a local focus distinct from central Worthing.

Behind the seafront the land rises to the chalk of the South Downs, with public footpaths that climb from residential streets into open downland.
